The Seal of the Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes
The Seal of The Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes (ADGL) is the red cross of St. George within a shield, a common symbol for churches in the Anglican tradition, including the province of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) of which the ADGL is a member. The cross divides the shield into four quadrants, three of which are blue, to represent the Great Lakes and the globe contained within the logo of the ACNA, supporting our evangelical calling to “Go and make disciples of all the world.” (Matthew 28:19) The upper right quadrant is purple, representing the Diocese’s origins in the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA), whose logo color is purple,as well as the ecclesiastical color for the episcopate. The shield is surrounded by a double vesica piscis with a golden background color, which encompasses the name of the Diocese to the left, and the Great Commission to the right.
Inside the vesica piscis on the left is the year the Diocese was established, and to the right, the slogan “To bless, to heal, to serve.” These words, and the symbols chosen for the shield, represent the three streams of the Church, referred to by the Rt. Rev. Roger Ames, first bishop of the ADGL, in his address at the Diocese’s Constitutional Convention on April 30, 2010 — sacramental, evangelical and charismatic.
The dove in the lower quadrant of the shield is a symbol for the Holy Spirit, representing the charismatic stream; the chalice and host represent the sacramental stream, and the Scripture represents the evangelical stream. The bishop’s mitre at the top of the shield is symbolic of the catholicity of our Church and our episcopal governance. Above the mitre are the words “Veni, Sancte Spiritus” (“Come Holy Spirit”),symbolizing the Holy Spirit who guides us in all things for the glory of God our Father through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The seal is especially suitable for official business of the Diocese, including letterhead, official papers and certificates, flags, banners and liturgical emblems.
The Logo of the Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes
The Logo of the ADGL is a stylized, more contemporary version of the official seal, and is ideally suitable for brochures, items such as apparel, coffee mugs, window decals, and other promotional items. It may also be used on letterhead.
The logo is in the same vesica piscis shape as the seal. The colors from the shield form the background, with a cross in the center, overlaid with the symbols from the seal. The words “Veni, Sancte Spiritus” are omitted from the logo because they are more intricate than many applications of the logo would allow for. The logo (but not the official seal) may also be used in some applications without the words around it, as shown above, right.
